The Bunkyo Ajisai Festival marks its 42nd year.
A place for exchange across generations, deepening community bonds and showcasing the charm of Bunkyo. Like hydrangeas deepening in color under the rain, these 9 days invite person to person, community to community, to gently connect. It has become a beloved early-summer tradition of Bunkyo.
Set in Hakusan Park — the oldest park in Bunkyo Ward, established in 1891 — and the adjacent Hakusan Shrine, around 3,000 hydrangeas in a rainbow of colors, with blossoms casting cool shade along bamboo fences, welcome you.

Hakusan Shrine, located in Hakusan, Bunkyo-ku, is a historic shrine founded in 948 AD, enshrined from Kaga Province (present-day Ishikawa Prefecture). Known for blessings of good relationships and relief from toothache, the shrine was revered by the Tokugawa shogunate and is counted among Tokyo's Ten Shrines. The wild ancestor of Japanese hydrangeas. Its decorative flowers frame the center like a picture frame, giving it the name "gaku" (frame).
